I just saw the film Children of Men directed by Alfonso CuarĂ³n, based on the book by P.D. James.
Wow. It's fucking brilliant. The story is set in a dystopian near-future where humans have been infertile for 18 years. Britain has turned into a totalitarian state where foreigners are an illegal underclass. This may remind you of the recent "V for Vendetta", but the two are completely different.
Children of Men grips you from the first second and sucks you in, thanks to the hand-held filming and continuous shots. Fans of Battlestar Galactica and Firefly can relate. The gritty, realistic world is made even better thanks to the inclusion of hundreds of seamless special effects. This is no Star Trek, it's life and it's not pretty.
Combine that with a cast including Clive Owen (Gosford Park), Julianne Moore (Far From Heaven) and Chiwetel Ejiofor (the sword-wielding, philospher-assassin in Serenity) and you have one heck of a mind-fuck.
Children of Men beats Donnie Darko as best film ever for me. It just came out in North America, but Europeans may have to look for second showings to see it.

wow
A real geek
I understand your world only when i'm stoned
I agree its awesome it
I agree its awesome it should've won the cinematography award at the Oscars!
Loved it too!
What was so eerie about it was that it's isn't science fiction, it looked like it could be our world tomorrow. It's really contemporary - with global warming, fear of epidemics, and the millions of refugees pushing at the doors of EU (Gibraltar) and USA (Tijuana) today.
