New Drupal theme: FriendsElectric

Feb 17, 2005

I've created a new theme for Drupal, called FriendsElectric. You can check out a quick live demo. You can get it from its Drupal.org project page.

The theme is tableless, can handle 1 to 3 columns and supports all theme engine options. The layout is fluid with fixed-width sidebars. Customizability is not so high due to the heavy use of images and the voodoo magic all over the CSS.

The biggest trouble was getting the layout to behave. It seems every approach to CSS layout out there suffers from at least one of these issues:

  • (Floated) fieldsets inside the main content go crazy
  • Clears inside the main content break the layout
  • Completely fixed-width layout

All of these are bad when the content can be as varied and complicated as in Drupal. I managed to get rid of most issues in IE, Opera and Mozilla, but I have this sneaky suspicion that the Safari/Konqueror will need some adjustment. Feel free to report bugs, but do specify browser/os/version, and send a screenshot to me if possible (e-mail address on the left).

wow.

That is probably the best theme ive seen for drupal...ever. Good work. Sadly, the link you gave doesnt seem to work. =(

Both links in this blog work for me.

FriendsElectric

Thanks Steven.. FriendsElectric really looks nice. I'm a Mac user with Safari, and everything I see so far looks great. I downloaded and could see what you meant about customizability -- you really had to knock yourself out with all those graphics. Since my site's name involves Orange Blossom though, maybe I'll experiment anyway;-) I haven't downloaded or installed the new version of drupal or the php module as yet. I hope I'll be able to figure out where everything goes.

Again.. thanks. With the clarity and sparceness of your design of this site I was a little surprised to see you producing something so close to what's been available.. but you seem to be capable of compromising, and that's nice.. you are helping to evolve drupal with terrific design.

Visually similar, functionally not

The design is not at all special, and yes it follows current design trends closely. But it is unique in that it is a very flexible template.

For example, it fully supports left/right block placement and will hide empty sidebars. Or it can support a logo, a slogan and a site title, any of them turned on/off.

These are things which are typically not found in templates for simpler CMSes like MovableType and WordPress, and this is what makes it interesting IMO.

Also, given that this template is released to the public for anyone to use, I'm reluctant to make it really special visually. Unlike code, graphical designs lose their value when re-used and shared.

FriendsElectric and IE7

Your Theme for drupal is by far the most outstanding one I've seen so far, congratulations, but it has one "problem": IE7 does not like it too much, the background graphics disappear in IE7 RC. This is especially sad, as IE7 is approaching as an automatic update in the near future (around Nov 1). So please, please it would be really great to see your theme working in IE7 too.
Thanks in advance,

Chris

Not my concern

I have no interest in supporting yet another iteration of a broken browser.

Fix for IE7

Nov 02, 2006 dominic

Hi Steve,

I've been Googling around for months now trying to find a fix for this problem with FriendsElectric and IE7:

http://www.mariposaHD.tv/node/862
http://drupal.org/node/78479

Seeing how Windows XP just gave me my mandatory "Update to IE 7" alert, I'd really like to find a way to get FriendsElectric working with Internet Explorer 7.

I can totally appreciate your lack of interest in supporting Microsoft's broken browser. It is annoying that Microsoft doesn't ever seem to follow standards and seems to be forcefully installing browser updates with broken CSS support.

But the bottom line is that in the next few days a majority of casual web surfers will be using this browser and like any reasonable webmaster I'd like my page to render correctly for them. Having broken rendering for all IE7 users hurts our ability to use Drupal and the best theme for it, FriendsElectric.

Again, I can understand your position on not investing any time to fix this, but seeing how this page is the #1 Google hit for 'friendselectric ie7' I figured this is as good a place to ask as any:

Are you (or anyone else) aware if a fix for this problem has been found?

Many thanks,
http://www.mariposaHD.tv

Same issue...

...I have tried to find a working replacement for FriendsElectric for quite some time. Without success. Working = works with IE7 and looks good.

I would really appreciate help in fixing FriendsElectric's issues with IE7.

Many thanks in andvance....

Well, the new Drupal is out. Will there be an update to this superb theme as well?
